Bill Belichick gave an exclusive interview on Wednesday and he talked about a variety of topics including his favorite player, Tom Brady. He noted that Brady is not a great natural athlete but he called him a really special player.
The interview with Bill Belichick happened at the Mission BBQ in his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland and it was conducted by Suzy Welch of CNBC. They talked about a variety of topics mostly about football including his upbringing as a coach, Tom Brady and Super Bowl LI.
The 64-year-old head coach grew up in a football family. His father, Steve Belichick, was a big influence on him since he was an assistant coach for the United States Naval Academy. He started as a special assistant for the Baltimore Colts in 1975 before moving to several teams including the Detroit Lions, Denver Broncos, New York Giants, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. He was hired as the head coach of New England Patriots in 2000.
Tom Brady joined him in 2001 and they have won five Super Bowl championships together. Bill Belichick told Suzy Welch that Brady is not really a great athlete but a special player nonetheless. He praised his quarterback's football IQ, mechanics, hard work and discipline.
"Really special player to coach. Tom works very hard. He is very smart, he's trained hard. He's worked hard on his throwing mechanics. He's worked hard on his mental understanding of the game and process. He's earned everything that he has achieved, but he's not a great natural athlete. He is a very smart, instinctive football player," Belichick said, per NBC Sports.
Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are considered the greatest player-coach duo in the history of the NFL. Some even believe that Belichick is the greatest coach of all time while Brady is the greatest player ever. The two are still going strong and they are looking to achieve the perfect season and their sixth Super Bowl title next year.
Other topics that were tackled in the interview besides football and Tom Brady include the "Deflategate" and former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez. Bill Belichick called "Deflategate" ridiculous while he believes Hernandez was a tragedy.
